Plants and plant materials for health – quality and utilisation
Characteristic
The study programme includes The following topics: commodity science of health-promoting and medicinal plants with elements of biology and cultivation methods, storage, packaging and preservation methods for plant raw materials, the importance of plant products in the diet, methods for assessing the quality of plant raw materials, exotic medicinal plants, characteristics of plant medicines and principles for their marketing, pharmacognosy, elements of pharmacology, human anatomy and physiology, plant aromatherapy, principles of first aid and food safety issues including HACCP principles. The study programme takes into account the topics of the course in herbal merchandising, required to obtain the qualifications necessary to run herbal and medical shops in accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of Health. . The classes are taught by specialists from the Warsaw University of Life Sciences and the Warsaw Medical University. Practical classes are conducted in laboratories and in the field. Classes are held from October to June, in a series of 12 Saturday-Sunday sessions in the Horticultural Faculty building, No. 35 (next to the greenhouses).

Description of people / groups of recipients to whom the postgraduate studies are dedicated:
The degree programme is aimed at those wishing to deepen their knowledge on topics related to the cultivation and use of medicinal plants and plants with high biological activity in health prevention, as well as their quality assessment and marketing technology. The degree course may be of interest to those wishing to set up a business involved in the production, storage, marketing and processing of medicinal and health-promoting plants. The topics of study may also be of interest to those with a hobbyist mindset who wish to broaden their knowledge of interesting plant species and plant substances that have a positive impact on the human condition and well-being.
Required prior qualifications:
Students can be enrolled if they have at least a first degree.
General characteristics of learning outcomes:
A postgraduate student shall achieve, inter alia, the following learning outcomes: acquire knowledge of
the cultivation requirements and properties of health-promoting and medicinal plants cultivated
and obtained from natural sites; acquires knowledge of the marketing of herbal products,
standardisation, legal regulations; familiarise oneself with the basics of plant cultivation and storage methods
health-promoting and herbal medicine; familiarises oneself with the basics of pharmacognosy, pharmacology, human physiology
in order to select and use plant products skilfully; acquires the ability to recognise
of the most important medicinal and health-promoting plants, evaluation of their functional characteristics, selection of the harvest date,
selection of preservation methods; acquires the ability to use standard methods of quality analysis

Recruitment of candidates for studies is open and is on a first-come, first-served basis and the submission of a
complete documents.

– a copy, or a copy certified by the university, of the diploma entitling the student to undertake postgraduate studies. In the case of graduation from a higher education institution abroad, a candidate submits the original diploma and its translation into Polish confirmed by authorised institutions, as well as a document confirming the nostrification of the diploma or a certificate of exemption from the nostrification procedure.

The total cost of attendance for one postgraduate student is: PLN 5800
payment in two installments
o First instalment of 2900 zł – by 1 October 2024.
o 2nd instalment 2900 zł – by 15 February 2025.
Admission to postgraduate studies takes place after the total of:
– meeting the recruitment requirements,
– paying for the course and sending the payment confirmation to the Head of Studies within 7 days at the latest
before the start of your studies.
At the justified request of the student, submitted before the required payment date,
The dean may postpone the date of payment or spread the payment into instalments.
The terms and conditions for the completion of postgraduate studies (under the terms of the Regulations for
Postgraduate studies at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences):
– passing of all subjects taken during the studies,
– passing the final examination on the material presented during the course of study with a score of
at least sufficient,
– completion and defence of a thesis in the final examination with at least a satisfactory result.
Detailed rules for the preparation, submission and defense of the diploma thesis and the final exam:
1. the diploma thesis shall be carried out by the student under the guidance of a person selected by the
Head of studies from among the lecturers due to his/her competence in the chosen topic
work.
2. The dissertation topics selected by the student shall be approved by the Head of Postgraduate Studies.
3. The student should choose a thesis topic during the first semester of classes.
4. The thesis is a literature review.
5. Deadline for submission of the thesis – one week before the final examination at the latest.
6. The thesis is defended during the final examination before a commission appointed by the
Dean of the Faculty on the proposal of the Head of Postgraduate Studies.
7. The date of the final examination is set by the Head of Postgraduate Studies in the timetable.
The examination takes place no earlier than one week after the date of the last congress, in June. Persons,
who do not pass the examination on the first date may take the examination on the second date
designated by the Head of Studies, no later than 30 September.
8. The final grade for the degree programme, awarded by the Examination Board, is the arithmetic mean of the
from the final examination grade and the thesis grade.
9. In order to be admitted to the final examination, all subjects must have been passed.
